Moore Wikimedia Community End-of-Year Annual Report 2023

January 17, 2024

Let’s first of all acknowledge our former co-lead, Musahfm, for his continual support of our community. We started the year 2023 by taking part in the Wiki Loves Folklore photo walk in a community called Yɔɣu in the Tolon district, which is noted for blacksmithing. Community members took pictures and videos of various folklore and uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. We also participated in the Wiki Loves Folklore and Feminism 2023 writing contest, where we created 40 articles on notable Burkina Faso women and some tourist sites to increase the incubator.

In June 2023, we received a joint micro-funding of GHS 3000 with the Gurene Wikimedia Community from the Africa Knowledge Initiative, where we took part in the AU Day Campaign edit-a-thon by successfully translating 40 trade centres in Africa into the Moore language titled “Preserving African Heritage in the Moore Language.” In the same month, we participated in the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group contest dubbed 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana by translating 275 members of the 8th Parliament biographies into Moore. In August, we embarked on a recruitment drive to get more active editors. We successfully created three Wiki Hubs, namely TaTu (Tamale Technical University), TACE (Tamale College of Education), and BACE (Bagabaga College of Education). We didn't stop there; we organised a series of workshop trainings on Moore orthography to equip them well.

In September, we organised a mini-contest for our community members. We also participated in the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group 7th Parliament of the 4th Republic contest. In the same month, selected members of the community took part in the translate wiki project. Currently, we are taking part in the Wiki World Heritage Intangible Contest, which is an international contest. Two of the community's most active members were recognised during the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group End of Year Together and Awards Night.

Username Raizkgh was bestowed as the male Wikimedian of the Year 2023 for the Moore community for his immense contribution and for increasing our incubator content. Here is an excerpt from him: "Alhamdulillah, I appreciate your support and guidance. Alhaj Darajaati, and thanks to the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group for this great motivation. I am so glad, and I promise not to sleep on this. Together, we can digitalize our language. God bless you all.”

Issahaku Sumaya, username Nat1620, was also bestowed with the female Wikimedian of the Year 2023 award for Moore for her unwavering passion and dedication to keeping our incubator active. This was what she had for us. “I appreciate your love and support throughout this journey. Thanks to the Dagbani Wikimedians User Group and everyone who has the zeal for this digitalization. Indeed, love leads; let's keep it up.”
